Food Review: Hangry Joe’s Hot Chicken Has When It Was Cool on Fire!

By: Karl Stern (Patreon / Facebook / Email)

Karl and Tonya from When It Was Cool recently traveled back to one of our favorite new food places located in Cullman, Alabama- Hangry Joe’s Hot Chicken! This was our third trip to the new hot chicken restaurant which Tonya first scoped out a few months ago. Always looking for a new place to eat, I was surprised she picked a Nashville Hot Chicken restaurant since she usually leans away from the super spicy end of things. I, on the other hand, usually crave the heat, surprisingly, neither of us were disappointed.

First, let it be said that when they say “hot” they really mean “HOT”. As the helpful manager told another customer as we were waiting in line, “Our spicy scale trends hotter than most places…” This was correct. Tonya chose the “mild” which, is honestly perfect. I, on the other hand thought I was being conservative in choosing “Hot” which was actually one step down the heat scale from “Angry”. Let me tell you, as a hot food lover, “Hot” was intense so I can’t image how strong “Angry” is. I probably would have rolled around the floor crying. Make no mistake, the food was delicious.

It seems from researching this restaurant online that there are, as of Spring 2024, only four of these restaurants scattered across the United States. Their main website states: “Hangry Joe’s Igniting Taste Buds Worldwide: We’re crafting experiences that begin with a spark of heat and end with a satisfied smile. Born from a rich heritage of culinary excellence and a passion for bringing people together, Hangry Joe’s Hot Chicken is a testament to a journey of flavor that transcends borders. From the bustling streets of the East to the vibrant locales of the West Coast, touching hearts in Dubai and Korea, our journey is flavored with the zest of ambition and the warmth of community… As we continue to grow, our mission remains unchanged: to spice up lives with our delectable hot chicken and weave the community’s fabric tighter with every shared meal. Join us at Hangry Joe’s, and let’s make every day a celebration of flavors, traditions, and togetherness.”

So far, we have sampled the wings (thank goodness the wings aren’t slimy, which is the number one way to get me NOT to review your restaurant) which were very good, the chicken tenders which are exceptional, served with a piece of bread, pickles, waffle fries, and a very good Hangry Joe’s sauce. But our favorite is the sandwich. The chicken is huge, and the cheese perfectly offsets the heat to make it very enjoyable and delicious. Tonya got her’s with the slaw and I got mine without. We both agreed it was fantastic.

So, our final score? Thumbs Up: A+. The staff has been super friendly every time we have been and, despite Hangry Joe’s Hot Chicken in Cullman, Alabama being over an hour away from us, it is worth the drive, and we will be back! Fantastically, hot chicken.
