01-15-1924: Harold Calvin “Sonny” Myers is born.
02-11-1924: A match in Kansas City, MO between Joe “Toots” Mondt and Joe Stecher degenerates into a shoot and Mondt punches Stecher and knocks him out. Stecher wins by DQ.
02-12-1924: Wayne “Big” Munn makes his debut as a pro wrestler following a short, failed boxing career. Munn defeated Bill Beth in New York City using several football tackles.
03-12-1924: Former pioneer wrestling champion Jack Carkeek dies at the age of 63 in Havana, Cuba.
03-25-1924: Chicago, IL: Dexter Pavillion: Attendance 12,000: Paul Martinson defeats Fred Paulson… Wayne Munn defeats Joe Zongalewicz… Mike Romano defeats Joe Zickman… World Heavyweight champion Ed “Strangler” Lewis defeats Stanislaus Zbyszko 2 falls to 1.
04-01-1924: St Louis, MO: Coliseum: Attendance 6,000: Hans Steinke defeats Luis Rolazom… Joe Toots Mondt battled Renato Gardini to a one hour draw… World Heavyweight champion Ed “Strangler” Lewis (w/Billy Sandow) defeats Jim Londos 2 falls to 1.
05-30-1924: While not one of the most important moments in pro wrestling history, I couldn’t pass up the story about Ollie Olsen losing his squirrel mascot on this date in Columbus, OH. While wrestling, Olsen’s squirrel mascot escaped. The newspaper reported that he was sad about it. The story had a happy ending. Apparently, he found it the next day.
06-09-1924: James Edward “Jim” Barnett is born in Oklahoma City, OK.
06-19-1924: Leo Nomellini is born in Lucca, Italy.
07-15-1924: Bobo Brazil (Houston Harris) is born in Wilson, AR.
08-03-1924: In Los Angeles, CA at the Philharmonic Auditorium: Promoter Lou Daro: Attendance: 5,500: Ed “Strangler” Lewis defeated Joe “Toots” Mondt in 2 hours.
08-22-1924: Pat O’Connor is born in Raetihi, New Zealand.
08-27-1924: In Los Angeles, CA at the Philharmonic Auditorium: Promoter Lou Daro: Attendance: 5,500: Ed “Strangler” Lewis defeated Stanislaus Zbyszko… Frank La Marr defeated Nick Velcoff… Pat McGill defeated John Hackenschmidt… K. Ikuta defeated Emil Maupa.
09-04-1924: In Los Angeles, CA at the Philharmonic Auditorium: Promoter Lou Daro: Attendance: 5,500: Ed “Strangler” Lewis defeated Stanislaus Zbyszko… Joe “Toots” Mondt defeated Herman Stroh… Frank La Marr defeated Charley Olson.
09-25-1924: In Los Angeles, CA at the Philharmonic Auditorium: Promoter Lou Daro: Attendance: 5,500: Ed “Strangler” Lewis battled Joe “Toots” Mondt to a draw… Pat McGill defeated Frank La Marr… Dick Daviscourt defeated Ray Steele (it is unknown if this is Pete Sauer wrestling as Ray Steele. If it is, it is the earliest known usage of that name by Sauer.)
10-01-1924: Bob Geigel (Robert Frederick Geigel) is born in Algona, IA.
10-13-1924: In Los Angeles, CA at Washington Baseball Park: Promoter Lou Daro: Attendance: 10,000: The largest attendance to this point for wrestling in Los Angeles: Ed “Strangler” Lewis defeated Joe “Toots” Mondt.
12-02-1924: Nick Gotch defeats Light heavyweight boxing champion Battling Siki in a boxer verses wrestler match in Philadelphia, PA.
