July 21, 1984 Southeastern Championship Wrestling Television Show Review

We continue our look at the NWA Southeastern Championship Wrestling promotion and television program from Dothan, Alabama television studio.
There are three of the four television shows for July 1984 on YouTube, missing only the 7th and I may have that in my personal collection once I get around to converting it. So, here we go, July 21, 1984.
Wrestling was so much better when it was only one hour. Charlie Platt & Ric Stewart introduce the show. They say that the National Wrestling Alliance has ordered the "Tennessee Stud" Ron Fuller to sign a contract to defend the Continental title against someone from the Southeastern area. As recent as last week he had been refusing to do so.
To the ring for our first match: Vic Rain verses Randy Cousins. Never heard of Cousins before or since. Rains is the former NWA Southeastern champion. He won the title from Jimmy Golden with a loaded boot and then lost it soon afterward to the returning Austin Idol. I still have no memory of Rains and he was in here for a while. His promos are terrible and he is largely forgettable. Vic Rains wins.
Ron Fuller is out now and is being forced to defend the NWA Continental title against someone in the Southeastern area. He has been given a choice of 8 opponents to choose from. So, Ron starts marking them off one by one- Dory Funk, Jr- No. Austin Idol- Nope. Dusty Rhodes- No. Bob Armstrong- No way. Harley Race- Nope. Jimmy Golden- No. Michael Hayes- Not happening. G.A. Jacker- Yep. Ron Fuller picks him because he's never heard of G.A. Jacker before. Well, I have because he was around for a minute or two in 1981 and Ron Fuller should have known him too since he owns the promotion. G.A. Jacker is, of course, the Georgia Jaw Jacker which is the pre-Bullet masked gimmick of Bob Armstrong.
Out comes the Georgia Jaw Jacker to make fun of Ron Fuller for signing the contract.
We get the rundown for the upcoming Birmingham, AL show at the Boutwell Auditorium: Rick McGraw verses Michael Ragin, Ricky Gibson verses Boris Zurkoff for the NWA Alabama title, Jimmy Golden verses Vic Rain in a Texas Death match, R.A.T. Patrol (Johnny Rich & Scott Armstrong & Tonga Kid) verses Arn Anderson & Jerry Stubbs & Billy Spears, Austin Idol verses Rip Rogers with the NWA Southeastern title on the line, and Ron Fuller defends the Continental title against the Georgia Jaw Jacker.
Vic Rain promo for his Texas Death match with Jimmy Golden. Terrible promo as usual from Rain. Ron Fuller comes out and rants and raves about having to face a masked Bob Armstrong.
Jimmy Golden & Georgia Jaw Jack come back out to cut a promo themselves.
Next match is in the ring: Boris Zurkoff (NWA Alabama champion) (managed by Billy Spears) verses Les Freeman. I always thought Les Freeman was a fine wrestler. He probably should have got a junior heavyweight push or something. Boris Zurkoff wins with a Cobra Clutch. Les Freeman is on Twitter as @pcbnole
Austin Idol is out next to cut a promo about being the NWA Southeastern champion. During the promo he starts planting the seed for Jerry Stubb's future babyface turn. He says he is surprised by Stubbs and prefers to remember him by his babyface gimmick of Mr. Olympia.
We cut now to Ric Stewart who has a trophy sitting on the desk. Out comes Jimmy Golden to accept the trophy who, supposedly, was given the trophy by the fans because he is the most popular wrestler in the area. Jimmy Golden now watches tape of Ron Fuller verses Bob Armstrong in a Texas death match where Vic Rain runs in which, of course, then brings out Jimmy Golden.
Now we have the Billy Spears' family out for a group promo featuring Boris Zurkoff & Arn Anderson & Jerry Stubbs. Tommy Gilbert was injured last week and is not there. They watch video from the arena of Tommy Gilbert wrestling against Scott Armstrong after being injured last week. Scott Armstrong wins the NWA U.S. Junior heavyweight title.
Next match is up: R.A.T. Patrol (Johnny Rich & Scott Armstrong & Tonga Kid) verses Paul Brown & Ricky Gibson & Michael Ragin in a six man tag team match. We have some babyfaces verses babyfaces here. Ricky Gibson & Michael Ragin have both been pushed as babyfaces recently. I like how they keep saying that the Tonga Kid is from Samoa. I would have figured the ISLE OF TONGA since it's in his name. Charlie Platt has been calling him the TONKA Kid for a month now. Paul Brown starts trying to cheat but the babyface Ricky Gibson won't have it. Tonga Kid wins it over Paul Brown.
Billy Spears is back out with Arn Anderson & Jerry Stubbs to watch them regain the NWA Southeastern tag team titles from the R.A.T. Patrol. Anderson nails Stubbs during the match in order to get the win, sacrificing him to gain the titles. Again, this is to further set up Jerry Stubbs' upcoming babyface turn. Jerry isn't so sure Arn has his best interests in mind. Here's a spoiler- Arn doesn't have his best interests in mind.
Back from commercial with the Spears' family again- Boris Zurkoff & Arn Anderson & Jerry Stubbs. They now have the Alabama and Southeastern tag team titles. Over to the R.A.T. Patrol (Johnny Rich & Scott Armstrong & Tonga Kid) along with Ricky Gibson who talk about their upcoming matches.
Rip Rogers is out to watch film of himself verses Austin Idol from the arenas.
TV Main Event: Austin Idol verses The Superstar (Ray Harris). Idol wins fairly quick with the Las Vegas leg lock. (Special thanks to Les Freeman for helping identify The Superstar)
