01-12-1944: The New York State Athletic Commission mails out a letter to all the deputy wrestling commissioners in the state proclaiming that $50 fines would be given to any who: “Throws his opponent out of the ring; uses the drop kick, ups with the knee, strikes with the elbow or closed fist, or uses tactics aimed at knocking an opponent’s head against the steel turnbuckle connecting the ropes to the ring post.”

Pinkie George is again promoting Ray Steele as the National Wrestling Alliance “World” champion in Des Moines, IA.

03-07-1944: Babe Sharkey wins a tournament to face Ed “Strangler” Lewis for the Maryland World title defeating Leo Wallick in the finals.

03-27-1944: Gray Mask regains the World lightweight title from Gorilla Ramos in Hollywood, CA.

03-29-1944: Boston, MA: Boston Garden: Attendance 10,000: Sandor Szabo defeated AWA War Time Duration Champion The Golden Terror (Bobby Stewart) to win the title. Sandor Szabo remained the AWA War Time Duration titleholder until he lost it to Steve Casey, returning from the War, in an AWA World Title unification match on April 25, 1945.

03-30-1944: Ronnie Garvin (Roger Barnes) is born.

05-04-1944: Dave Levin defeats Orville Brown in Kansas City for the Midwest title. This time the title changes hands.

09-12-1944: Former World heavyweight champion Gus Sonnenberg dies at the age of 46 from leukemia.

09-20-1944: A newspaper article in Auckland, New Zealand had this interesting feature: “One of the most colossal characters in all of wrestledom is Ed “Strangler” Lewis. The 265 pound, 53 year old ace of the world’s mats was a visitor to Vancouver last month after completing a 14 week tour of U.S. Army, Navy, and Marine bases, traveling night and day and giving two hour shows every night. Lewis talks of 36 years of wrestling, explains that he retired about five years ago, stayed out of action for three years, and finally weighed 365 pounds. ‘I came back then’, he says with a chuckle, and his large head, nestling comfortably enough on a neck that takes a 20-inch collar, nods in full agreement with himself. ‘Are wrestlers harder to figure than horses?’ we asked, ‘I don’t think so,” answered Lewis, ‘I could never beat the horses.’

11-05-1944: Joe Louis, world heavyweight boxing champion, temporarily on furlough from the Army, announced he would referee the feature bout of a wrestling show by promoter Paul Bowser at Boston Garden on November 16.

11-08-1944: Orville Brown returns to Des Moines, IA to wrestle and promoter Pinkie George promotes him as the “National Wrestling Alliance” World champion.

11-16-1944: Referee Joe Louis presides over a War Duration title match in Boston which sees Sandor Szabo defeat Yvon Robert for the title.
